Choosing the Right Cubicle Sizes for Your Office

Discover cubicle sizes, types of cubicles, and how to measure them correctly.

Your office is the place where ideas are sparked, business goals come to fruition, and workplace victories are celebrated as a team. It’s also the place where your employees come in need of a workstation that’ll support their next big idea just as much as it’ll support their lumbar.

While your space might already be equipped with ultra plush office furniture such as chairs and sleek glass whiteboards, what about your employee cubicles? To make the most of your office space while tailoring the set-up to meet the needs of your team, it’s certainly worth considering the right cubicle sizes (and shapes) for your workplace’s cubicle farm.

To make this process simpler than saying yes to more coffee, we’re diving into the specifics of cubicle measurements as well as a few factors to consider when making your choice.

Sit down, get comfortable, and let’s tackle the design work for your office workstations together.

Available Cubicle Sizing Options

Let’s kick off your workstation makeover by examining cubicle sizes in depth, including the standard heights, widths, and styles of cubicles on the market today.

Panel Height

Panel height allows you to customize the level of privacy or collaboration a standard cubicle permits. Although the exact numbers may vary, the heights of the average cubicle wall panels (measured from the floor up) are as follows:

  • 42” – Low cubicle panels such as these tend to be the best option for an open office environment.
  • 50” – Mid-height cubicle panels provide optimal privacy when seated and comfortable conversations when standing.
  • 66” – High panels typically reduce the most noise and offer privacy when seated and standing.

Pro tip: When customizing cubicle partition panels, don’t forget to carefully consider the material. A see-through material like glass will keep an open feel to the cubicle, whereas an opaque material like recycled plastic will amp up the privacy.

Width and Depth

The width and depth of a desk will help determine how much tabletop space is available to an employee, and will help to better understand the best position for a desk. You probably don’t want them so strapped for space that their laptop has to double as a coffee coaster, but would prefer them not to be swimming in space either.

The average dimensions of rectangular office cubicles are as follows, with the first number being the depth:

  • 24” x 48”
  • 24” x 60”
  • 24” x 72”
  • 30” x 48”
  • 30” x 60”
  • 30” x 72”

Note: Keep in mind that the dimensions of curved and L-shaped desks will vary from these measurements. We recommend consulting the product descriptions of these particular desk types to get a more accurate idea of their footprint.

Styles

Now that you have a clearer idea of available heights, depths, and widths, you can consider your options for your cubicle system:

  • Rectangular – It’s a classic cubicle design that keeps everything within reach and promotes an open office feel.

  • Curved – A smooth 120-degree design like this introduces a curved shape into the cubicle space without sacrificing too much square footage.

  • L-shaped – Perfect for employees that need a bit more work surface space and privacy, this shape divides a single workstation into two sections and is typically paired with high panels.

  • 3 Factors to Consider When Selecting a Cubicle Size and Type for Your Office

With an assortment of sizing options at your fingertips, now’s the time to consider how they’ll look and function in your agile space design. To help you find the right fit, let’s consider a range of potential factors, from available space to ADA accessibility.

    #1 Available Space

Start by assessing how much square footage you have available. From here, count up how many employees need cubicles and which employees you’ll want to group together. Grouping cubicles together is a clever way to make the most of a space while facilitating collaboration. In most cases, these set-ups are available in pods of two, four, or six.

    #2 Collaboration Strategies

If you want to consider some modern office design ideas, such as encouraging maximum collaboration, or even putting together a breakout workspace, you’ll want a divider-less—or low-divider—cubicle pod, either in a rectangular or 120-degree shape. We recommend taking a look at our 120 Think Desks, 120 Jot Desks, or a rectangular Jot Desk Bundle since these options offer the best of both modern design and synergy-focused workstations.

Alternatively, If you need cubicles that favor privacy and individual focus, we recommend our L-shaped Cubicle Workstation Series A or Cubicle Workstation Series B. Featuring high panels and maximum desk space, you can ensure comfort and productivity for your staff—not to mention, a broad canvas on which to display everything from inspiring visuals to family photos.

    #3 Accessibility

For employees who use a wheelchair, you’ll want to provide a desk with an adequate height from the floor to the bottom of the desk to accommodate them comfortably. The Americans with Disabilities Act recommends a minimum width of 27 inches of knee clearance between the floor and the underside of the cubicle’s table.1 Fortunately, by opting for height-adjustable cubicle desks, building comfortable work accommodations for all employees is quick and simple.
